Journalists’ Roundtable 5/17/13

After a nearly twelve hour debate, the Senate approves a budget proposal that includes a plan to expand the state’s Medicaid coverage as desired by Gov. Jan Brewer. We’ll talk about the fate of the proposed budget as it heads to the house.

Ballet AZ & Alzheimer’s/Blood Sugar & South Mountain Freeway

A new University of Arizona study suggests a possible link between elevated blood sugar levels and risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease. The Ballet Arizona’s TOPIA is back for the season. It’s a night of dining and ballet under the desert sky at the Desert Botanical Garden. And the public will be informed about the new draft proposal for the South Mountain Freeway.

Maricopa Sustainability & Medicaid Expansion & Ozone Levels

Maricopa County has launched a new phase of its six-year-old Green Government Program. The county has implemented hundreds of green measures, such as recycling, energy conservation and installing four megawatts of solar panels.The Grand Canyon Institute released a new analysis of Medicaid expansion in Arizona. Temperatures are soaring, and that brings on an increase in ozone.

Sequestration Impact on Arizona & Phoenix Cool Roofs on Arizona Horizon

It’s been two months since the across-the-board federal budget cuts known as “sequestration” started. Experts say they expect this budget cut to be worse for Arizona than the housing bubble.The city of Phoenix has started a project to paint rooftops white to cut energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions. Over the next year,  volunteers will paint rooftops as apart of a grant.
